As with anything involving power tools, safety is the number one concern in woodworking. Make sure that you always use tools properly and wear the proper safety equipment. When your power tools are on, you should always be wearing safety equipment. You could get hurt if you do this.
Pre-stain wood conditioners should be used prior to staining any wood project. Using a pre-conditioner will help you avoid blotches when staining. Conditioners can smooth the uneven grain of your wood and cause the stain to penetrate the wood more evenly.
1/2 Inches
Make your own sanding blocks. Cut six 3/4″ pieces of plywood for each sandpaper grit. Be certain they are approximately 2 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. Spray some adhesive on your blocks and on the cork tile. Stick a single block onto the cork and make sure you’re cutting the cork in a flush way using your utility knife. This piece should then fit you hand fairly well and be secure enough to not slip. Use a utility knife to trim the sandpaper around the edge of the block. Label each block.
Before using any stains or finishes on your wood, make sure you stir them and not shake them. The ingredients in them can settle. However, if you shake it, it may create bubbles and not allow the product to mix well. Make sure that the product is thoroughly stirred, and everything is evenly dispersed.
Make sure you use the right kind of wood appropriate for the task at hand. Some woods are fragile and will break upon exertion. If you don’t know how each wood type is going to handle what you’re trying to do, take a bit of time to learn about each first.
Gel Stains
Gel stains make staining furniture items easier. Liquid tends to run after it’s put on, whereas a gel stain sticks to the wood much better. Also, because your gel stains are a lot thicker their pigment is going to be consistent while applying it so that the stain is more even on vertical and horizontal pieces.
Before you even begin sawing anything, check the blade to make sure it’s in good condition. A dull blade will make it nearly impossible to cut something as needed. It could also lead to costly errors, depending on what type of wood you are using.
Does your grip need more springiness? Using a spring clamp can come in very handy, but using them with one hand can be a challenge. These clamps can be difficult to open without the use of both hands. However, it can be made easier. Take all the clamps you’ll need and put them on a piece of wood or something within reach. This will make it easy to use them with one hand.
