Are you good with your hands? Then woodworking may be a great hobby for you. Woodworking has been enjoyed for centuries. Folks have always loved the appearance of wood items, and you can make them yourself with the right instruction.
You can make reusable sanding blocks. Use your scrap pieces of 3/4″ plywood and cut as many blocks as you need for the sandpaper grits you use the most. Be sure that the measurements are around two-and-a-half inches by four-and-three-quarters inches. Use spray adhesive on both the cork tile square and your blocks. Put one block on the tile square and cut the cork with a utility knife. Put glue on the sandpaper and apply to the cork. You can make smaller blocks if you wish as well. These can be used for smaller pieces demanding finer sanding.
Never use your fingers like a guide. Instead, a long and thin piece of scrap wood should be used to push your piece through your saw. This will prevent you from loosing a finger or two, which would make working with wood very difficult.
Add a stair gauge to the shop that you create. They are most often used to layout stair jacks, but you can use them to clamp your carpenter’s square. This adds a very practical element to your project that can save time and money. When you use this square, you’ll cut perfectly straight every time.
Golf Tee
If the hinges on your interior doors are loose, you can use a golf tee to fix them. Remove hinges and door from door frame and lightly tap one golf tee inside each of the screw holes. Cut the golf tee off flush with the surface and put the door back on the hinges. The tee will allow the screw to bite into the door.
Do you have a hard to reach screw that needs tightened, but there isn’t room for your hand and the screwdriver? You should look to your toolbox for assistance. Use a screwdriver with a long handle and 12 points. Use the socket to place on a screwdriver, and then attach it to a ratchet.
Wear strong, closed-toe footwear when you are doing woodworking. You’ll have wood pieces, nails, and tools all over the place. It is important to provide protection for your feet in case an upturned nail is in your path, or something heavy falls on your foot. You want your shoes to also keep you comfortable while you’re walking around the shop.
Look online and at garage sales and flea markets for great deals on tools. You can buy high quality tools at bargain basement prices this way. This can save you money when building your workshop.
Working with your hands has never been more fulfilling. Now you should be able to start making wood pieces of your own. You should apply the tips you just read and keep practicing on your woodworking.
